What is a California Legal Document Assistant Bond?
The California Legal Document Assistant (LDA) Bond is required by the State of California. A legal document assistant is a person who provides, assists in providing, offers to provide or offers to assist in providing for compensation. Any self-help service to a member of the public who is representing himself or herself in a legal matter, or who holds himself or herself out as someone who offers that service or has that authority.
It can also be a corporation, partnership, association, or other entity that employs or contracts with any person not exempted under section 6401. As part of his or her responsibilities, provides, or assists in providing, or offers to provide, or offers to assist in providing, for compensation, any self-help service to a member of the public who is representing himself or herself in a legal matter or holds himself or herself out as someone who offers that service or has that authority.
What are the qualifications for a Legal Document Assistant Bond?
All applicants must possess at least one of the following:
- A High School diploma or General Equivalency diploma.
- A Bachelor’s degree in any field. As well as either a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney or;
- A Certificate of Completion from Paralegal Program that is accredited but not approved by the American Bar Association.
- A Certificate of Completion from a Paralegal Program approved by the American Bar Association.
All who qualify must register in the county in which they work and post a $25,000 surety bond.
